The answer is, it is the only Nutrition source to foetus and majorly to ensure a healthy child and also a healthy mother post-delivery.
Some important nutrients during pregnancy are:
Energy
During the first trimester it is not important to increase the energy intake in diet as it is to retain the food in the body, owing to the challenges posed by morning sickness, gastritis and constipation and other problems related to digestion. It is advisable during this period to eat some carbohydrate rich food early in the morning even before stepping out of the bed, that is, a dried toast or a biscuit, some women also respond well to fruits such as an apple. One can even have a small quantity of nuts upon rising.
In 1st trimester it is not important to increase the energy intake in diet as it is to retain the food in the body
In 2nd and 3rd trimester, it is important to increase the energy intake by additional 300-350 kcals per day
Example of small meal combos for pregnant ladies:stuffed chapatti+ curd, veggie lentil biryani/pulao, beetroot kebabs, fruit salad etc.
